How to Help Someone Considering Suicide


Learning Goals and Objectives

On completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand and use basic engagement and helping skills with someone suicidal
  • Understand how people may begin to think about suicide and how the suicidal person feels
  • Describe the journey of suicide from idea to act
  • Understand the role of untreated clinical depression and other mental illnesses and substance abuse to increased suicide risk
  • Engage in an interactive and helpful dialogue with someone suicidal in the context of sharing a book about understanding suicide and how to reduce the risk of a suicide attempt
  • Understand the key role that staying connected with someone considering suicide has in keeping people safe, and how this alone can save a life
